Jazz News: The ‘Pec clarifies “We’re at Dazzle,” Cynthia Erivo visits CO 2x this spring, KUVO 40th anniversary concerts

The 'Pec by Marc Sabatella

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music and the arts.

With last week’s story on new architecture around the old El Chapultepec location at 20th and Market, the protectors of the “El Chapultepec” legacy wish to clarify that the spirit of that Hall of Fame music venue lives on at the piano lounge at the back of Dazzle, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Anna Krantz-Diaz, daughter of the Pec’s Jerry Krantz wrote us to say that the family preserves “El Chapultepec’s legacy of live music in Denver though partnerships with Dazzle Jazz and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.” Their mission is to ensure access to quality, affordable live music, so the El Chapultepec Piano Lounge at Dazzle hosts no-cover late night shows Thursday through Saturday nights. The upcoming shows for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 11 p.m. are David Honig on the 13th, SF1 Drum Duo on Friday the 14th, and Hunter Gammel & Alexi Petersen on Saturday night the 15th at 11 p.m. (SOURCE: The Pec Legacy)

Vocal mega star and Emmy/Grammy/Tony winner (and Oscar nominated) Cynthia Erivo has a couple of visits to Colorado planned this spring. On Monday evening, April 7, Erivo will give the keynote address at the Conference on World Affairs on the CU-Boulder campus. It will be in conversation format, with the Business School’s Director of Leadership, Dr. Stefanie K. Johnson. Students whose submitted questions are selected are invited to a meet and greet.  On Saturday, May 10, Erivo will perform with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in a fundraiser for the Symphony. Her repertoire will include Broadway hits, standards, and very likely, something from her role “Elphaba” from the Oscar-nominated film “Wicked.”(SOURCE: Cynthia Erivo with Colorado Symphony

An event note, as part of KUVO’s “40 Years of Music” concert series, the Joshua Redman Group with Gabrielle Cavassa plays at the Boulder Theater this Wednesday, March 12. The saxophonist, composer, and bandleader is touring in support of his first release on the Blue Note label, “Where Are We” (2023). For the first time, Redman features a vocalist who has been getting rave reviews, Gabrielle Cavassa.

Stay tuned to KUVO for more concerts to be announced as part of our 40th anniversary celebration! (SOURCE: Joshua Redman Group with Gabrielle Cavassa)
