Vinyl Vault: Sonny Rollins, "Love at First Sight"

The next Vinyl Vault will feature a 1980 album from Sonny Rollins, entitled "Love at First Sight.” The album was released on Milestone Records and featured a cast of players primarily known for funk and fusion, including George Duke on electric and acoustic keyboards, Stanley Clarke on electric bass, Al Foster on drums and original Headhunter, and Bill Summers on percussion.

However, this was a Rollins session so there was little of the funk and bombast sometimes heard on other albums these backing musicians played on around the same time. “Little Lu,” a Rollins composition, has a lilting Caribbean feel. “Strode Rode,” another Rollins tune, is built around a catchy, recurring riff. And “Caress,” one written by Duke, finds the band gracefully sliding through a relaxed groove.

Join Geoff Anderson on the next Vinyl Vault on Tuesday, April 8, at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
