The Rich Chiaraluce All-Star Quintet will perform the music of the Cannonball Adderly Quintet — one of the most famous groups in the history of jazz. Cannonball was soulful, swinging and funky. Starting in the late 60s and into the early 70s, as the jazz audience started changing, Cannonball also changed with the new style combining rock, gospel and straight-ahead. Whenever he played, no matter what style, there was always a great groove, spirit and soul to his music.
Rich Chiaraluce - alto sax
Brad Goode - trumpet
Eric Gunnison - piano
Mark Simon - bass
Paul Romaine - drums
Rich Chiaraluce is a top saxophonist that performed with many of America’s great jazz big bands. He was the lead alto player with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. This is a position he has held for a number of years. Working with Buddy Morrow was truly a privilege for Rich. The band has performed several times at Montreal Jazz Festival in a Battle of the Bands with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Who won? TDO was smiling afterwards. Rich was also the leader of the Artie Shaw Orchestra for several years. He has performed with many of the famous singers from the American Songbook Era including Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Stanton, and Natalie Cole and with the Woody Herman All-Stars.
Eric Gunnison- one of the nation’s top jazz pianists has toured and recorded as the pianist and synthesizer player for the popular vocal quartet Rare Silk from 1982 to1986. From 1986 to 1991 he toured internationally and recorded as the pianist and arranger for the legendary jazz vocalist Carmen McRae and was the pianist accompanying McRae on her tours of Switzerland in 1988 and of Cuba in 1999 with Dizzy Gillespie. He also played keyboards for and toured with Nelson Rangell from 1993-1996. Gunnison’s current associations include touring internationally as well as recording with the sensational vocalist Roberta Gambarini, whom he has accompanied since 2001.
Brad Goode- Brad Goode cemented his reputation as a bebop phenom by performing with the legendary Bird man Red Rodney--to whom, with his own shock of red hair, he bore an uncanny resemblance. Goode, whom Dizzy himself dubbed "Little Red Rodney," has been deeply influenced by those giants. In addition to performing extensively with Jazz icons, Goode has been Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado since 2004. His energies are largely focused on teaching these days, and his students are contributing to the jazz scenes from New York to Los Angeles.
Paul Romaine- has performed with countless combinations of Colorado's best players and with internationally acclaimed artists such as Eddie Harris, Benny Golson, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Gunther Schuller, Charlie Rouse, Eddie Gomez, Jack McDuff, Rufus Reid, Clark Terry, Robin Eubanks and many others. During his association with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Paul toured North America performing concerts and clinics. He serves as a mentor musician/clinician in several Denver area school districts. Paul founded the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) which offers a program for middle school and high school students from throughout the Denver metropolitan.
Mark Simon- is a highly in-demand veteran bassist in Colorado with many years of experience playing with top name players from all over the country. In addition to touring with Carmen McCrae, he has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, Dave Grusin, Eddie Harris, Joe Farrell, Roben Ford, Randy Brecker, Lew Tabackin and Regina Carter. Mark serves on the faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and is a valued clinician/teacher in the region. Denver musicians consider themselves very fortunate to have regular access to his soulful, resonate tone, and his hard-swinging grooves.
