Patrick McDevitt | KUVO 30 Under 30
Patrick McDevitt – an upright and electrical bassist hailing from Parker, Colorado – was first introduced to music by his musician parents.
“I feel like I’m a product of the Denver music scene,” Patrick said, adding that his style is a compilation of Denver jazz greats including Ken Walker, Paul Romaine, and Brad Goode.
Patrick enjoyed a stint with the New Orleans group, The Mike Dillion Band – bending genres with a twist of jazz, latin, bizzaro, funk, and punk – before returning to Colorado.
As an educator at Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, Patrick sees firsthand the lessons music instills in young students.
“You learn to communicate, you have to be kind,” Patrick said. “You have to value other people’s time and respect them.”
Patrick feels very lucky to be part of Colorado’s jazz scene.
“There’s a sense of camaraderie, but at the same time everyone is pushing each other and not settling,” Patrick said.
You can hear Patrick jamming on the electric bass with The Funky Fresh Trio, featuring Josh Quinlan (effected saxophones and flute, Rhodes, synthesizer) and Alejandro Castaño (drums). The group merges funk and world music with jazz, offering up groovy tunes with quirky melodies and improvised solos.
To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
