Tom Gerswhin | 30 Under 30

Educator and trumpeter Tom Gershwin - a featured artist on KUVO’s latest release, Live at the Oasis Volume 11 -  has already enjoyed a diverse musical career ranging from a 3 year stint in the Army Band to cruise line contracts and faculty positions.

“Whatever the style of music, I try to be a lyrical player,” Tom said. 

In 2012, Tom graduated from New York University, where he was an adjunct faculty member. Tom was also a faculty member at Douglaston School of Music and Art. 

Tom recorded his debut album “Sweet Pastimes” in 2013. Its intimate ballads, jovial swing tunes, and bebop gained international radio play.

Last year, Tom was the visiting artist at The University of Colorado Denver in their early jazz group, The Claim Jumpers. 

“Since coming back to Colorado, I found that there was this growth in Denver and the jazz scene as well. There are a lot more venues open, and there just seems to be a lot more demand for music,” Tom said.

“There’s just a nice community of musicians out working these days.”

Tom seeks to understand a daily process that allows emotion and creativity to thrive in order to inspire students, fellow musicians, and listeners.

“Wherever you are in life, you can play music,” said Tom. “If you love music, it can always be a part of your life.”

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
