Live & Local: esperanza spalding shares more on new release, Milton + esperanza
Bassist, singer, & composer esperanza spalding’s work fuses the past and the future leading to an innovative and informed approach to contemporary jazz. A 5-time GRAMMY winner, she has released 9 studio albums. She has collaborated with her heroes, the late Wayne Shorter & more recently Milton Nascimento, along with many others like Robert Glasper & Terri Lyne Carrington. Along with music creation and education, she’s a philanthropist and advocate – currently working to create a BIPOC artist sanctuary in her hometown of Portland, OR.
Her latest collaboration with Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento is an album celebrating the bond between mentor and disciple while offering a glimpse into their friendship. The Morning Set’s Abi Clark spoke with Esperanza about the path that led to Nascimento, their friendship, and the writing/recording process of their latest release on Concord Records, Milton + Esperanza.
