World-class composer and trumpeter Jonathan Powell returns to the Nocturne stage to present an unforgettable night of music with his newest project: his Mambo Jazz Party. This group draws from Powell’s 20-year freelance career as a trumpet player in the salsa and Latin jazz scene in New York City. Having been a member of Eddie Palmieri’s groups for 10 years, as well as recording and performing regularly with Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Miguel Zenon Big Band, Oscar Hernandez, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Ricky Martin, and many more, MamboJazz Party brings a unique take on the music of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. Mambo Jazz Party’s debut record was released to great critical acclaim earlier this year, on August 9th, on Circle 9 Records, even landing a Chamber Music America/DorisDuke Foundation New Jazz Works Grant for the ensemble. For this one-time performance, NY-based saxophonist Jeremy Powell (Jonathan’s brother) will join as a featured special guest!

Originally from Largo, Florida, trumpet player Jonathan Powell moved to New York City in 2001. In 2003, he earned praise for his participation in Sam Rivers Fluid Motion. The same year, he formed the group Nu Sangha and released “Transcend.” The band’s newest release, “Beacons of Light,” earned a four-star review in Down Beat.

In 2021, Jonathan relocated to Colorado to take a position with the US Air Force Academy Band. Since his move to Colorado, he has co-released a record featuring 10-time Grammy award winner Eddie Palmieri titled “Eddie Palmieri presents: Solar Sonido”. Jonathan performs with a wide variety of artists as a sideman, including Blood, Sweat and Tears, Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Septet and Salsa Orchestra, Arturo O’ Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Miguel Zenon, Sam Rivers, Pedro Giraudo, Ricky Martin and JT Taylor of Kool and the Gang. Jonathan has participated in over a dozen Grammy Nominated and Grammy Winning albums with these artists and many more.
