The Kat Ellis Trio is a new project aiming to present jazz standards in an intimate and personal way. Each player is part of the rhythm section and the interplay is more exposed, which is exciting for the players and the audience. Accompanying her at the Full Cycle Café are esteemed professors Sean McGowan (guitar) and Bijoux Barbosa (bass).

Kat Ellis is a very active, accomplished and popular vocalist and band leader. Her singing is authentic and accessible. Her gift of expression and storytelling using her emotive voice lets her cover tunes ranging from reflective to torchy, witty to sorrowful. She is a featured vocalist with the Denver Jazz Orchestra and leads a jazz quintet, quartet, and now a trio.

Sean McGowan is a CU Denver Professor and an award-winning guitarist who combines many diverse musical influences with unconventional techniques to create a broad palette of textures within his compositions and arrangements for solo guitar. He has produced five solo recordings of original music and jazz standards, all of which have garnered critical acclaim from leading periodicals and musicians. His two most recent recordings were both first round Grammy nominations in four categories.

Eduardo “Bijoux” Barbosa is a CU Boulder Professor. He was born in Sao Paulo-Brazil where he studied music theory and electric bass with Prof. Nadir Dos Santos. In Brazil he played with pop bands and Jazz Fusion oriented bands. He then moved to Caracas- Venezuela in 1991 where he worked with many well known artists. He is one of the top studio musicians that can be heard on over 300 recordings. He has performed with Herbie Mann, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Bryan Lynch, Russell Ferrante, Chuck Loab, Gerald Albright and Lee Ritenour, to name a few.
