This week’s Vinyl Vault takes a listen to an album entitled “The Tommy Flanagan Tokyo Recital.” Recorded and released in 1975 on Pablo Records, it’s an all Ellington/Strayhorn programme. Flanagan, on piano, is backed up by Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Widely known as an accompanist, especially for singers like Ella Fitzgerald, this session gave Flanagan a chance to step out front and display his chops and ability to tastefully interpret standards and some lesser known pieces from the Ellington songbook. Check out the Vinyl Vault on The Night Beat with host Geoff Anderson on New Year’s Day at 8:30 pm on KUVO Jazz.
