Fusion meets Progressive Rock…in Holland…on the next Vinyl Vault. Dutch fusion band, Solution, released several records in the 1970s and we’ll hear some tracks from their third album, “Cordon Bleu,” released in 1975 on Elton John’s Rocket Record Company label.

Much of the album consists of extended instrumental pieces, but they aren’t jam sessions. The long pieces move through an ever-evolving soundscape with new themes appearing constantly interspersed with recurring themes weaving in and out. The band did leave some room for solos because, of course, there’s that jazz influence.

The core band was a quartet with bass, drums, keyboards, and woodwinds. The band employed guitars sparingly with the keys as well as the flute and saxophones primarily carrying the melodies.

This is one of those obscure albums that the few who ever acquired one liked to show off to their friends to prove what great taste they had in music and how a little barrier like the Atlantic Ocean couldn’t keep them from digging up some really great stuff.

Find out what it’s all about on Tuesday, October 15 at 8:30 p.m. on the Vinyl Vault with host Geoff Anderson on KUVO JAZZ.
