Vinyl Vault — Rainer Brüninghaus, “Freigeweht”
The Vinyl Vault has some ECM music on tap this week. We’ll hear tracks from a 1981 album from German keyboardist Rainer Brüninghaus entitled “Freigeweht” which translates to English as “Set Free by the Wind.”
Brüninghaus, on both piano and synthesizer, was joined by Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, Jon Christensen on drums, and Brynjar Hoff on oboe and English horn. Brüninghaus had backed bassist Eberhard Weber on some of his albums and “Freigeweht” was Bruninhaus’ first chance to step out on his own.
The concept of the album evokes both air and flight and the compositions capture the essence of each. Some tracks elicit a droning or hypnotic vibe while others, aided by Brüninghaus’ synthesizer work, soar into great, unregulated spaces.
Check out “Freigeweht” on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, September 17 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
