The Vinyl Vault features a swinging live album from vibist/percussionist Lionel Hampton, recorded in 1980. The title is “50th Anniversary Concert; Live at Carnegie Hall,” a release on Sutra Records.

Hampton played vibes and was the conductor of the all-star band assembled for the occasion of Hampton’s 50th anniversary in the music business. Some of the band members included Pepper Adams, Cat Anderson, Ray Braynt, Doc Cheatham, Arnett Cobb, Panama Francis, Chubby Jackson, Charles McPherson, Bob Wilbur, and many more.

Much of the music that evening was a jam session with solos passed around peanuts at a baseball game. But several of the standards were treated with elaborate arrangements. Either way, toes were tapping all night long.

Check out the next Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, August 20 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
