Vinyl Vault — Jean Luc Ponty, “Fables”
The Vinyl Vault features the 1985 album from French violinist Jean Luc Ponty, entitled “Fables.” This one marked the end of Ponty’s long association with Atlantic Records and it was his twelfth for that label. The album reached No. 9 on the Billboard jazz charts in 1985.

Ponty had been experimenting for several years with synthesizers as a way to broaden his sonic landscape and “Fables” continued that trend with two cuts on the record performed solely by Ponty on multiple overdubbed instruments. That doesn’t mean he had forsaken the violin as there is plenty of his incendiary string work throughout the disc.
One of his frequent collaborators from that era, Allan Holdsworth appeared on electric guitar on one track. On the other ensemble pieces, Ponty was joined by Baron Browne on electric bass, Rayford Griffin on drums, and Scott Henderson on electric guitar.
