The Prisoner is the 7th album led by Herbie Hancock released in January 1970 and recorded in April 1969.

It was his final recording on the Blue Note label before he moved to Warner Brothers Records.

The Prisoner is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was assassinated a year previous to the recording dates.

The participating musicians on the date are Joe Henderson, Johnny Coles, Hubert Laws, Garnett Brown, Buster Williams, and Albert “Tootie” Heath.

Herbie called it “a social statement written in music.”

Tune in to the Vinyl Vault on Tuesday, August 27 at 8 p.m. Andy O’ will be subbing for Geoff Anderson.
