Vinyl Vault — Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, “Sweet and Lovely”
This week’s Vinyl Vault will feature some straight-ahead blowing when we listen to a few tracks from an album entitled “Sweet and Lovely.” The LP was released in 1975 on the Classic Jazz record label.
The mid-1970s were a tough time for jazz. Rock and roll had long since taken over the airwaves and disco was threatening to muscle its way in. Long-time jazz stalwarts like Lockjaw continued to soldier on, however. Perhaps it was the waning enthusiasm for jazz in America that led Lockjaw and his band to record this album in Nice, France. Or maybe they just liked the beach scene that summer. But whatever the motivation for recording in France, Lockjaw and his mates brought their A-game and they recorded a hard-swinging gem.
Davis, on tenor sax, was joined by his jazz contemporary on trumpet, Harry Sweets Edison. That veteran front line was backed by Gerry Wiggins on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Oliver Jackson on drums.
Check out “Sweet and Lovely” by Lockjaw Davis with host Geoff Anderson on the next Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, July 30 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
