Vinyl Vault — Dick Johnson Plays Alto Sax & Flute & Soprano Sax & Clarinet
An album by multi-woodwind man Dick Johnson will be the feature on the next Vinyl Vault. The album, released in 1980 on Concord Records, was entitled “Dick Johnson Plays Alto Sax & Flute & Soprano Sax & Clarinet.”
Johnson was joined on the album by powerhouse pianist Dave McKenna. Also on the album were Bob Maize on bass and Jake Hanna on the drums. The program featured a combination of jazz standards as well as a few original compositions by Johnson.
Johnson released about 10 albums under his name. He also spent considerable time with the Artie Shaw Band. In fact, from 1983 until his death in 2010, Johnson was the leader of that band. Over the years he also worked with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Dizzy Gillespie.
Check out all the instruments Dick Johnson plays on the next Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, August 29 at 8:30 pm on KUVO JAZZ.
