Vinyl Vault — Dave McKenna, “This is the Moment”

The Vinyl Vault features the great pianist Dave McKenna (1930 – 2008) and his album, “This is the Moment.” This one was recorded and originally released in 1959, but the album was reissued in 1988 on the Portrait label and was digitally remastered at the time. The result is an excellent sounding record in full stereo high fidelity.

McKenna was often accused of having three hands because of his active style most often showcased on his solo recordings. “This is the Moment” was a trio recording with John Drew on the bass and Osie Johnson on drums. Certainly, the trio format did nothing to inhibit McKenna’s explosive, virtuosic playing.

The song selection was a combination of jazz standards and band originals by both McKenna and drummer Johnson. No matter the composer, McKenna treated all the tunes with the utmost good taste and a swinging sensibility.
