Vinyl Vault — Dave McKenna Quartet Featuring Zoot Sims
I’m The next Vinyl Vault will feature a swinging 1974 session on Chiaroscuro Records with the self-explanatory title, “Dave McKenna Quartet Featuring Zoot Sims.”
Dave McKenna (1930 – 2008) was a powerhouse piano player known for his hard-swinging style and a technique known as “three-handed swing.” This is one of several recordings he made for the Chiaroscuro label in the mid-70s before he moved to the Concord label where he recorded many albums as a leader and a sideman.
Zoot Sims (1925 – 1985) primarily focused on tenor saxophone, but for this recording, he doubled on soprano saxophone as well. During his career, he recorded over 75 albums as a leader or co-leader and even more than that as a sideman.
This album finds the leaders breezing through a set of jazz standards with backing from Major Holley on bass and Ray Mosca on drums. We’ll hear “Limehouse Blues,” “I Cover the Waterfront” and “Grooveyard.”
Tune in to the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
