Vinyl Vault—Big Joe Turner, “Kansas City Here I Come”
The Vinyl Vault heads over to the blues side with a 1984 album by Big Joe Turner entitled “Kansas City Here I Come.” Turner was known as a blues shouter because he got his start in the music business in the days before there were reliable public address systems, so he and the other blues shouters had to shout over the sound of the band. This necessity eventually turned into a style all its own, even after amplification became common.
The program features two Turner originals, “Big-Legged Woman” and the title track, “Kansas City Here I Come.” The rest of the tunes are covers of songs by people like BB King, ZZ Hill and Buddy Johnson among others.
Dig some blues on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson Tuesday, September 22, at 8:30 pm. Only on KUVO JAZZ.
