Vinyl Vault — Bennie Wallace, Bordertown
On the next Vinyl Vault, we’ll feature an album by tenor saxman Bennie Wallace entitled “Bordertown,” released in 1988 on Blue Note Records. Produced by Dr. John, the album maintains a New Orleans funky vibe throughout.
Besides producing the album, Dr. John played keyboards. He and Wallace were joined by other top-shelf musicians including John Scofield on guitar, Eddie Gomez on bass, Ray Anderson on trombone, Herlin Riley on drums, and more.
The lead track on the record is entitled “Skanctified,” which Dr. John described as a combination of “sanctified” and “skanky.” That might be a great description of the album as a whole.
Join host Geoff Anderson for the next Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, July 2 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
