UNC Vanguard Jazz Combo LIVE on KUVO

KUVO’s High School & Collegiate Series presents the University of Northern Colorado Vanguard Jazz Combo on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m.

The UNC Vanguard Combo is the flagship of the UNC Jazz small ensemble program and focuses its repertoire on members’ original compositions.

Vanguard has won many DownBeat awards as a group and also for its members’ compositions, arrangements, and individual soloists. Vanguard members have been recipients of honors including Sisters In Jazz and Herb Alpert/ASCAP Young Composer awards, and have been recognized in competitions by ISJAC, the WDR Big Band, and the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition, among others. UNC’s small jazz ensemble program typically includes about 12 groups ranging from trios to septets and features the UNC Funk/Soul Band and other special focus groups based on student’s interests. The UNC Vanguard Combo was directed for many years by Jim White, then by Drew Zaremba, and is now directed by Erik Applegate.

Upcoming performances include the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival (April 18-20) and UNC Jazz Camp (July 7-12). The UNC Jazz Studies offers the first degree in the U.S. for LatinX Music.

Members of the UNC Vanguard Jazz Combo are Skyler Mendell (trumpet), David Bernot (saxophone), Jonathan Bumpus (trombone), Gavin Allen-Dunn (piano), Nathan Borton (guitar), Eirik Haugbro (bass), and Parker Sibley (drums).
