The Wednesday Night Beat Celebrates National Piano Month
Tune in every Wednesday evening throughout September as Night Beat host Doug Crane turns his attention to great jazz pianists in celebration of National Piano Month.
On September 6th we’ll be featuring recordings and compositions by Herbie Hancock. He’ll be taking the stage in a sold-out show at the Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder next Tuesday.
If we’re a little remiss this week in focusing on other piano-related things, it’s because there will be lots of world class jazz guitarists passing through the Colorado Front Range over the next few days.
Lionel Loueke is touring with Herbie. And Russell Malone is touring with bassist Ron Carter who will be holding court at Dazzle for three nights of performances next week.
Of note: With the recent passing of saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter are the last surviving members of the legendary Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s.
Taking place this weekend in Arvada, the Rocky Mountain Archtop Guitar Festival plays host to many jazz guitarists in both workshop and concert settings. We’ll feature a few of them on Wednesday evening including Fareed Haque, Frank Vignola, Ed Cherry and others as time permits.
Should the piano content seem a little light this week for a show supposedly about jazz pianists, blame the guitarists that will be in town. I promise we’ll double up on jazz piano content next week and for the remainder of the month.
