The Sandim-Royster-Shelley Group
On Saturday, October 8, Caffè Sole proudly presents The Sandim-Royster-Shelley Group. This vibrant, all-female contemporary jazz trio will premier all original compositions which are jazz rooted, intricately arranged, and strongly infused with rhythms of Brazil.
Carmen Sandim – An engaging jazz pianist, composer and music educator, has performed many times at Caffè Sole to sold out performances. Her compositions are lyrically beautiful and harmonically sophisticated but totally natural and accessible. Carmen combines harmonically sophisticated post-bop with traditions from her native Brazil. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sandim studied music at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and at the University of Colorado. Sandim first gained attention in the 2000s after moving to Boulder, Colorado. Her debut album, 2011’s Brand New, featured cornetist Ron Miles. In 2016, she won a grant from Pathways to Jazz to record her sophomore album, Play-Doh, released in 2019 via RopeadopeRecords. Carmen’s latest project “Mini Brazilian Beasts, released in 2022 on Octave Records, features jazz luminaries Ron Miles and Gilad Hekselman. Carmen currently lives in Denver and teaches at the University of Colorado Boulder, Metropolitan University of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver.
Amy Shelley is a multi-faceted drummer and composer with an eclectic background and training. She brings depth, nuance, and color to projects as she works and collaborates with artists in various genres and mediums. Her indie-rock band, High Fiction, is preparing to release new music this fall, and she composes for Evolving Doors Dance and accompanies professional dance classes.
Juli Royster is a freelance bass player in the Denver-Metro area, playing electric and upright bass. Her current musical endeavors include the band Cuddle with pianist Art Lande and drummer Amy Shelley. Juli has a Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor University and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
