The Right To Herself

This exhibition explores the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment, which legalized women’s right to vote, through the lens of women who self-identify as indigenous, women of color, and/or embody diverse racial, ethnic, and economic identities. Shown above (left to right) are work by Susan Sponsler-Carstarphen, Suchitra Mattai, and Letitia Huckaby.

The Right To Herself exhibition and related programs focus on various artists’ perspectives of equity and the equal rights movement both in contemporary society and in history. The exhibition explores the vote as a promise for agency and voice within society and highlights the specific rights that diverse groups of women fought for historically into the present. In featuring these themes, the show recalls, reclaims, and reimagines the power of women of diverse backgrounds in front of the lens as well as rectifying their lacking presence within photography history. The exhibit is organized by the Center for Fine Art Photography.

The exhibition is split between two locations and is also on view October 20 – December 12 at the Clara Hatton Gallery at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. You can also see it virtually through the Center for Fine Art Photography’s website (Lincoln Center Exhibit and Clara Hatton Gallery Exhibit). Additionally, the exhibition will feature an accompanying billboard, catalog, virtual talks, and events.

Gallery hours are 12 PM – 3 PM, Tuesday – Friday (closed holidays).
