The Night Beat — The Art of the Jazz Trombone
For the final Trombone Month program for 2024, and as April marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Duke Ellington, we’ll feature some of the trombonists that were part of his band including Lawrence Brown, Tricky Sam Nanton, and Juan Tizol. While each of them had distinctive soloing styles, their exemplary work as a trombone section in a big band has never been equaled. You’ll hear ample evidence of both on this week’s show.
We’ll also include Ellington classics performed by other trombonists including Steve Turre, Frank Rosolino, Wycliffe Gordon, and Delfeayo Marsalis. As you may already be aware, Delfeayo and The Uptown Jazz Orchestra will be performing at KUVO’s annual Live at the Vineyards on August 17.
Plus we’ll hear music and performances from three musicians sharing an April 27 birthdate: Percussionist and sitar player Colin Walcott and two all-time great tenor saxophonists, Joe Henderson, and Johnny Griffin.
Be sure to tune in beginning at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 for the 2024 finale of “The Art of the Jazz Trombone” as we close out our celebration of International Trombone Week Month on The Night Beat.
