Federal Records was formed in late 1950 as a subsidiary of Syd Nathan’s King Records. Founded in Cincinnati seven years earlier, King was unique among independent labels in handling everything involved in music-making in-house, from recording through mastering to production and shipping. This gave the savvy Nathan complete control of the process. Federal ran until the early Sixties, for the most part under house producer Ralph Bass. He was assisted by Johnny Otis; both were white men who understood black music.
