Bandleader Rico Jones is steadily becoming one of the top young saxophonists of his generation. Rico grew up in Denver performing under the guidance of local artists such as Paul Romaine, Greg Gisbert, Eric Gunnison, Art Lande, Brad Goode, and Vlad Girshevich.
In 2015, Rico was named one of KUVO’s “30 Under 30” young artists to watch. Bandmates Alex Heffron and Braxton Kahn were also on that list. Jones graduated with honors from the Manhattan School of Music and picked up several Student Music Awards from Downbeat Magazine, the Vandoren Emerging Artist Award, the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program, and recognition from other institutions and jazz programs along the way.
During the pandemic, Jones and friends performed over 100 free community outdoor concerts at Denver’s Sloans Lake. His efforts to share arts with his community garnered coverage from magazines, local news outlets, and PBS.
In 2021 CounterCurrent played Red Rocks and the Telluride Jazz Festival. In 2022 Rico Jones co led the first all indigenous big band and presented an original work written for the orchestra “Earth” at the Olympia Performing Arts Center in Washington State. Earlier in 2023 Rico performed across Ecuador as part of the Joan Sanchez Quartet.
Rico Jones now lives in Harlem, New York where he composes, practices, directs bands, performs, and educates music. He continually dedicates himself to the art of music and aspires to continue traveling around the world to share it.
