Spring Music Continues to Blossom | Norman Provizer’s Jazz Notes
Another group visiting town this week is the Fareed Haque/Tony Monaco Trio, a band that displays more than ample organ power. The combination of guitarist Haque and Hammond B-3 man Monaco has been through these parts on a number of occasions and never fails to catch the groove. The trio is at Nocturne, 1330 27th St., on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (303-295-3333).
Returning to the saxophone, Nocturne has reed players Keith Oxman on Friday at 7 p.m. and Anisha Rush on Saturday at 7 p.m. The weekend, late night show at Nocturne has pianist Annie Booth and her trio on Friday and saxophonist John Gunther with pianist Eric Gunnison on Saturday.
The great singer Ella Fitzgerald was born 100-years ago on April 25, 1917. And on Thursday, singer Sheryl Renee with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra celebrate the first lady of song at Dazzle with a 6:30 p.m. show sponsored by the Gift of Jazz that is listed as sold out with a wait-list available. And on Sunday, Dazzle has a senior recital at 5 and 7 p.m. from Julian Archer, Gabe Rupe and Liam Hughes-Butler supported by trumpeter Goode and pianist Gunnison. Another pianist, Carmen Sandim will play on a live broadcast from KUVO on Monday at 6 p.m.
Ravi Coltrane is also part of Saxophone Summit with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman. Interestingly, Lovano was at Dazzle this past week and Liebman will be part of the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival that runs April 20-22. There will be more on that in next week’s column.
On a final note: There is the second “Seeds of Southern Sudan Jazz Benefit Concert” on Wednesday at the Blake Street Tavern, 2301 Blake, from 6 to 9 p.m.
