Shemekia Copeland at Dazzle
Many of the great blues men and women of the past are gone. Yet their infectious, heartfelt rhythms and stories won’t let us go. And one wonders, what’s next for the blues? Shemekia Copeland is what’s next.
In the new generation of blues artists, Shemekia Copeland has stepped up big time. Daughter of late Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Johnny Clyde Copeland, Shemekia got “the call” to sing the blues as a teenager. She toured with her father, and music writers have a great time finding adjectives for the diversity of her approach. It’s authentic, that’s for sure.
Multiple Grammy nominations, Blues awards, and eight CDs later, her voice is sought out across the rock, blues, country and soul genres. Her song selections and collaborations are across the board, but her sound is all her own. And she’s not shy about using music for social commentary either.
