Salsa con Jazz will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fania Records!

Fania Records is the most important record label of the salsa era in fact, they marketed salsa at a time when it was an obscure new term for Afro-Caribbean Latin dance music so proficiently that salsa is now a name for a wide array of music styles worldwide. Founded in 1964, we will commemorate Fania’s humble beginnings from when the co-owners sold records out of the trunk of their cars to their meteoric rise, becoming a powerhouse that evolved into the label synonymous with salsa followed by acquiring many of their competitors and monopolizing radio airplay.

Part one of the two-part 60th Anniversary tribute will focus on its founders Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci’s vision to create a new label, their earliest recordings, the Latin soul-boogaloo-shing-a-ling era, the little-known artists and songs, and the beginning of the influential and extremely popular Fania All-Stars.

It all begins on Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m. hosted by Arturo Gómez, a KUVO JAZZ exclusive! Part two will take place on Sunday, December 8, same salsa station, same salsa time. Part two will focus on their glory years, the arrival of the “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz to the Fania roster, the Fania All-Stars travels to Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Havana, Japan, and other destinations around the globe.
