RIP Sergio Mendes; Feb. 11, 1941-Sept. 5, 2024

International music icon Sergio Mendes has died at age 83. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Los Angeles and had recently been challenged by the effects of long COVID.

According to a post on his Instagram account, he last performed in November of 2023 at sold-out venues in Paris, London, and Barcelona. Mendes remained current throughout his career. His 2006 collaboration album “Timeless” included music with the Black Eyed Peas, Jill Scott, India. Arie, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, and others.

His discography includes more than 40 albums, many reaching gold or platinum status. His most recent release was 2020’s “In the Key of Joy.”

Mendes won a Grammy for the 1993 album “Brasileiro,” a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Grammy Awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Real in Rio” from the animated feature film “Rio.”
