Review: “Raisin The Musical”
“Raisin The Musical” at Littleton’s historic Town Hall Arts Center.
What a performance I witnessed last night! Based on Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun.
The book is by Robert Nemiroff and Charlotte Zaltzberg, the music is by Judd Woldin, and the lyrics are by Robert Brittan.
Lorraine Hansberry’s American Classic A Raisin in the Sun opened in 1960 on Broadway. The cast at that time included: Sidney Portier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, and Debbie Allen just to name a few. This modern production, however, was stellar thanks to director and choreographer Christoper Page-Sanders. With a phenomenal cast of actors with incredible voices! “Raisin” was strikingly similar to the original play. Taking you deep into the lives of a proud Black family navigating societal challenges and dreams in 50s Chicago. With many influential scenes & musical numbers such as “Runnin’ to Meet the Man,” “Sweet Time,” and “Measure of the Valleys – A Denver native,” Mary Louise Lee (Mama) sang (not sing but sang) her heart out. Her emotional performance brought her & I to tears! It deeply touched my heart – such a powerful moment for any mother!
Emmanuel Hamilton who portrayed Travis Younger blew my mind. Remember his name! I’m sure we will hear from him again sooner than later in future performances. Micah J. Lawrence, (Walter Lee Younger) Heidi Carann Snider, (Benetha Younger), and Asha Romero (Ruth), were perfect in their respective roles. I loved Raisin: The Musical from the opening scene till the very end. It was hard to stay in my seat from the music and emotional movement. It’s their first time ever in Colorado!
Don’t miss it! Now through April 14. I can’t recommend it enough.
