On Stage: Airmen of Note with Marshall Gilkes

On Sunday, November 11, Veterans Day at 4 pm, KUVO’s performance series “On Stage” features the United States Air Force Airmen of Note with trombonist Marshall Gilkes, recorded in 2017 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, VA.

A famed trombonist, composer, arranger and educator, Marshall Gilkes comes by his talent naturally. He’s the son of former Air Force conductor Colonel Bruce Gilkes (Ret.)  But he’s put in the work, gaining acclaim with large ensembles like Maria Schneider’s Orchestra, Ryan Truesdale’s Gil Evans Project or the WDR Big Band, with whom he gained a Grammy nomination for “Köln” in 2015. Now on the faculty of Berklee College of Music, the Banff Center and elsewhere, Gilkes studied at the University of Northern Colorado before graduating from the Julliard School.

The U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note have a reputation for being one of the swingingest military bands anywhere! They carry on the tradition of Major Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force dance bands from the 1940s. The Airmen of Note Jazz Heritage Series, now available on radio, has hosted a who’s who of superior jazz talent since 1990.
