New music premiering Monday, April 26, at noon on New Music Monday:

Vincent Herring – “Preaching to the Choir”
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Vincent has been living in The Bronx since the late 1980s, he’s considered one the most gifted saxophonists on the current scene. For his latest he reunites with pianist Cyrus Chestnut who contributes while Herring wrote 2 tunes for this excellent album. Yasushi Nakamura is on bass and Jonathan Blake is at drums. There are nice renditions of 5 jazz chestnuts and 2 brilliant adaptations of soul music songs. All in all, a most pleasurable listening experience recorded live at Smoke Jazz Club of Manhattan.

Rodney Whitaker – “Outrospection The Music of Greg Hill”
Detroit born bassist of the highest caliber Rodney is a member of the fantastic faculty of Michigan State University of East Lansing that also includes the talented Etienne Charles, Diego and Michael Dease who all appear as part of this session with other fine players as well as Rodney’s daughter singing on 4 tracks.. The composer of all the songs, Gregg Hill is a native son of Detroit whom Whitaker says is filled with kindness, openness and humanity which is reflected in his music.

Jihye Lee Orchestra – “Daring Mind”
This South Korean composer-conductor-arranger made quite a splash entering the New York jazz community with her first recording back in 2017 that caught the ears of many veterans for her imaginative and adventurous music story telling. She continues down the same path with her follow up recording featuring a splendid line up of some of the best NYC musicians. Jihye Lee believes jazz is a daring spirit, to be creative and cultivating your instincts.

Every Monday beginning at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to KUVO Jazz, often ahead of their regularly scheduled release date. In addition to the music, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist, in particular if it’s a new or up and coming artist. New Music Monday is now in its 18th year!
