We’re debuting new music from Scott Colley-Edward Simon-Brian Blade, Judy Niemack, and Arturo O’Farrill. Tune in to Lunch Time! with Arturo Gómez on Monday, November 4 at noon.

Scott Colley-Edward Simon-Brian Blade: “Three Visitors”
Although all have played with each other individually and collectively in bands over the years, this is their first time playing as a trio. Their music is based on the premise that we are all living together in this physical realm on a temporary basis and through music we can extend our visits eternally. Pianist Edward Simon is originally from Venezuela and came to prominence in the 1990s as the pianist for the Terence Blanchard group. Scott Colley is a 4-time Grammy® nominee bassist who grew up in Los Angeles listening to all the giants of the bass who helped him forge his own path. Brian Blade is one of the best drummers of the current jazz scene, he is a product of Shreveport, LA, and became a “first call” drummer quickly after his arrival to New York in 1992.

“Three Visitors” features the talented saxophonist Chris Potter and vocalist Becca Stevens, each on one song of the album’s eight tracks, all originals by the trio.

Judy Niemack: “Voices in Flight”
An excellent vocalist with a worldwide fan base. Judy is also highly regarded as an educator with over 40 years of experience. Since 1995 she has taught at music schools in Brussels, Antwerp, The Hague, San Sebastián, and Berlin. She is a successful author of three books on jazz singing and is a fine composer and lyricist with over twenty recordings in her discography. On her latest album, Niemack continues her trend of recording with top-of-the-line accompanists. John Di Martino is her pianist this time out with the veteran Jay Anderson on bass. Her guests are Jay Clayton-second voice, and Jean François Prins from Brussels on guitar, he is a former student of Judy from the Berlin School of Music. “Voices in Flight” has fourteen above-average selections with eight composed in part or totally by Judy Niemack. It’s important to note that three of Judy’s penned tunes are writing the lyrics to three previous instrumental gems, two by Curtis Fuller and one by Kenny Dorham. Outstanding!

The Santiago Big Band ft. Marcos Fernández & Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra ft. Arturo O’Farill: “Santiago Brooklyn Santiago”
Multiple Grammy® and Latin Grammy® winner, son of the legendary Chico O’Farrill, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator, Arturo traveled to Cuba’s second largest, Santiago to collaborate with the Santiago Big Band under the direction of fellow pianist, Marcos Fernández. The album opens with a piano duo between the two leaders of the big bands followed by alternating songs, each band contributing five tracks. Arturo’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra recorded theirs in New York, while the Santiago Big Band recorded theirs in Santiago de Cuba. Thanks to the advancement of recording technology, musicians from both bands were able to appear as guests in the other big band. What a marvelous innovation!

Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of which are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist when it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
