Join Arturo Gómez on Lunchtime! as he debuts new music from Janis Siegel & Yaron Gershovsky, Bill Charlap Trio, and Michael Dease. Tune in on Monday, August 19 at noon.

Janis Siegel & Yaron Gershovsky: “The Colors of My Life”
Founding member of Manhattan Transfer, Janis Siegel has been busy of late, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the vocal harmony group’s recording and tour. Moreover, she has been guesting with several groups, particularly the Grammy® nominated Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Latin Big Band. For her newest solo album, Janis reunites with the pianist and arranger Yaron Gershovsky who put together a stellar trio and string quartet to accompany the vocals of Siegel. For this recording, they selected ten songs all written by the gifted composer, Cy Coleman.

Janis and Yaron have been collaborating since 1979 when Gershovsky joined the Manhattan Transfer as their pianist, music, and vocal arranger as well as songwriter that included two Grammy® nominated songs. Cy Coleman was a successful writer of songs, and several of his jazz standards are part of this new session: “Witchcraft,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “With Every Breath I Take” and others.

Bill Charlap Trio: “And Then Again”
One of the most revered pianists still active, Bill Charlap has a lengthy list of accomplishments, accolades, and an extensive discography. He and his trio were recently at Dazzle for their yearly two-night engagement that had all four shows sell out! Charlap has been working with the “Washington Brothers” since 1997, Peter on bass and Kenny on drums, no relation. Every year the trio plays a two-week residency at the historic Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, during their last residency they opted to record which served as an inspiration to take their superb playing one notch higher! All eight songs on this recording are from the Great American Songbook and the contemporary jazz canon performed to perfection with re-imagined arrangements.

Michael Dease: “Grove’s Groove”
After over 20 years of playing trombone, Michael Dease chose to start playing the baritone saxophone a few years ago and this is his second outing as a bari player. “Grove’s Groove” is a tribute to his former bandmate, the late Roy Hargrove nicknamed “Mister Hard Groove.” Wanting a tribute worthy of the amazing trumpeter Roy, Dease recruited Hargrove Alumni: Steve Davis-trombone, Rodney Whitaker-bass, Terell Stafford-trumpet, and Ulysses Owens Jr at the drums. To round out the ensemble there is Bill Cunliffe playing piano and Jocelyn Gould on guitar and vocals. A curious aspect of this tribute album is that it does not include any Roy Hargrove compositions, instead the nine-song playlist contains songs that Roy played or liked and are performed in a ‘Hargrove-esque mode.’ I am confident that Roy Hargrove would approve of this homage.

Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist, if it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
