New Music Monday | Like Son, Like Father & Jazz From St. Thomas
Since his emergence in the early 1990s, Christian McBride has not only become one of jazz’s most in demand bassist and bandleader, McBride has become an ambassador of jazz around the world. Christian has used his success to rescue out of obscurity, his father-fellow bassist Lee Smith who although is a living legend in their home town of Philadelphia, was not known out side of the City of Brotherly Love and cheesesteaks. My Kind of Blues is Lee Smith’s second recording as a leader, as with Smith’s first CD in 2012 his son Christian McBride has written the liner notes.
Dion Parson & 21st Century Band‘s debut is titled St. Thomas, not only for the jazz standard written by Sonny Rollins but also because the ensemble hails from St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. We’ll also be debuting new recordings by Mexican drummer, Antonio Sánchez-Three Times Three, the Columbia College Jazz Ensembles’s latest, Chuck Israels Jazz Orchesta’s Joyful Noise-a homage to Horace Silver, saxophonist Corbin Andrick, an up n comer from Chicago and vocalist Ellen Johnson’s Forms and Formless among another one or two new arrivals.
New Music Monday is heard every Monday from Noon until 1pn on Lunchtime at the Oasis hosted by this humble writer, Arturo Gómez
