New Music Monday—Joe Farnsworth, Arturo O’Farrill, & Yoron Israel
On Monday, October 4, at noon time, Arturo Gómez will highlight these recordings and more!
Joe Farnsworth – “City of Sounds”
Although drummer Joe Farnsworth has been around since the early 1990s has played with some of jazz’s best artists, in the last 5 years, he has become a highly sought-after drummer to record with and tour. Joe was born in Holyoke, MA. His father was a renowned regional trumpet player. Farnsworth attended high school in Jakarta, Indonesia, and absorbed many Indonesian music trends which he incorporates into his playing. Joe is accompanied by Kenny Barron-piano and Peter Washington-bass to make “City of Sounds” one of the best trio sessions of 2021.
Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble – “dreaming in lions”
For his Blue Note Records debut, Arturo trims down his big band to a nonet. O’Farrill wrote and arranged the entire project and his sons Adam and Zack play trumpet and drums respectively on a few tracks. The recording title, “dreaming in lions” was inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” and its timeless themes of pride and perseverance.
Artur’s legendary father, Arturo Sr is better known as Chico would surely smile and approve of this innovative path his son has taken just as he had after WW2.
Yoron Israel – “New Dreams”
For the past 30 years, Yoron has played with such prominent artists as Art Farmer, Abby Lincoln, Ahmad Jamal, Tony Bennet, Freddy Cole, and numerous others. Israel has been teaching at the prestigious Berklee College of music for many years and is publishing 3 books while preparing to play vibes for his next recording. This time out, Yoron hopes his music reflects the message of new hope while urging all to accomplish one’s dreams with a sense of joy.
Every Monday starting at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or up and coming artist.
