New Music Monday — Harold López-Nussa, Pete Zimmer, Patrick Cornelius
Lunchtime! with Arturo Gómez debuts new music every Monday on New Music Monday, tune in on August 21 at noon.
Harold López-Nussa; “Timba a la Americana”
The López-Nussa family spans several generations of musicians, Harold is a very talented pianist who since his late teenage years has been performing around the world with some of Cuba’s biggest names including Omara Portuondo of Buena Vista Social Club Fame. He and his younger brother Ruy on drums formed their own trio about 7 years ago and have played in Denver twice and have also played At KUVO 2 times as well, they will return in early November. The latest installment heads the brothers in a new direction as they relocated to France, and it widen their perspective as well as creating nostalgia for their former lifestyle in Cuba that had musicians stopping by their home daily. Recording with French chromatic harmonica player Grégoire Maret and New Yorker Luques Curtis on bass among others they took the latest Cuban dance style timba and added jazz elements producing an exciting album sure to have listeners moving, grooving, and dancing!
Pete Zimmer: “Dust Settles”
Living in New York City for over twenty years has matured drummer-composer-band leader and record label owner Pete Zimmer into a dynamic force on the scene. For his sixth outing and first, since the pandemic, Pete enlisted 4 of the musicians he respects the most to accompany him, Stacy Dillard-tenor and soprano saxes, Peter Bernstein-guitar, Mike Yamanaka-piano and Yasushi Nakamura on bass while Pete holds the sticks at the drums. Seven of the 10 tunes are Zimmer originals, and he arranged the other three. A most enjoyable album that undoubtedly will kick up dust throughout jazz radio land and streaming outlets for its hard-hitting music.
Patrick Cornelius: “Book of Secrets”
After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in music at Berklee School of Music, Patrick arrived to New York City over 20 years ago to further his studies while playing in the amazing jazz scene of the “Capitol of Jazz’. Eleven years ago, Cornelius received a grant from Chamber Music America and for one of the very times, he received a second grant from CMA last year, a superlative achievement! Patrick is currently serving on the faculty of The United Nations International School in NYC. His tenth album as leader features some excellent players like Diego Rivera on 2 tracks along with Patrick’s quintet. All twelve selections were written by Cornelius and demonstrate his intellectual approach to jazz while keeping it swingin’ and accessible.
Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist, if it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
