Join Arturo Gómez on Lunchtime! on Monday, November 11 at noon for New Music Monday. He’ll debut new music from George Cables, Arturo Sandoval, Vanisha Gould, and more!

George Cables: “I Hear Echoes”
Turning a spry 80-year-old on Thursday of this week, pianist George Cables has been leading his trio or band for sixty years! Born in New York City, Cables loved walking the streets late at night soaking in all the distinct neighborhoods, its people, its food, and its music. Classically trained, he was introduced to jazz when he attended the High School of Performing Arts which decades later became the location for the movie and television series, “Fame.”  Unlike most pianists, George gathered more influences from bands led by Miles and ‘Trane than listening to other pianists although he cites Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea as his role models for his piano style.

George Cables’ new recording. “I Hear Echoes” is a collection of the music he has heard throughout his distinguished career with one exception, the opener, “Echoes of a Scream” which was inspired by the painting he saw by Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). George chose bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Jerome Jennings to accompany him on this new adventure!

Arturo Sandoval: “My Foolish Heart”
Since arriving in the United States after defecting from Cuba in the early 1990s with the help of his hero, Dizzy Gillespie Sandoval has become known for his fiery trumpet and swinging piano player. He is also a timbalero and now with this new session, he debuts as a singer of ballads on three romantic standards. Anyone who has seen Arturo live on stage always walks away amazed at his virtuosity of the trumpet/flugelhorn, piano, and timbales. Here in Denver, many attendees of Arturo’s show at Red Rocks in the late 1990s still talk about his playing to the rock walls when he discovered how his trumpet sound bounced off of them encircling the audience.

In addition to Sandoval’s singing, four tracks feature the Budapest Scoring Orchestra where ‘Turo is not crooning. Jeremy Siskind is at the piano, Brain Bromberg plays bass, and the up-and-coming Charles Ruggiero is the drummer.

Vanisha Gould: “She’s Not Shiny, She’s Not Smooth”
Born into a musical family in the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley, her brother is the acclaimed pianist Victor Gould, Vanisha moved to New York City in 2015 to pursue her dream of becoming a vocalist. She immediately made her mark in New York upon her arrival leading her to perform at Manhattan’s leading venues including Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center after being named “Lincoln Center Emerging Artist” That led to her embarking on a successful European tour. She is not only a fine singer she writes her own tunes but always throws in a few standards when performing live.

Her new album was recorded in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada when she was on tour. Cory Weeds, the owner of the important Cellar Music recording label, was on his way to the Jazz at The Bolt festival he curates in nearby Barnaby, BC when he stopped dead in his tracks when hearing Gould sing at Frankie’s Jazz Club. He convinced Vanisha Gould and her band to make this album the next day at his Monarch Studios. Vanisha says the album title is exactly who she is, imperfections and shortcomings, lisp, woes, and joy all enunciated!

Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of which are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist when it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
