New Music Monday for April 19-Jazz Appreciation Month
Cuban drummer and 2011 McArthur Fellow awardee Dafnis Prieto releases a provocative straight-ahead project on his own Dafnison Music label, Dafnis Prieto Sextet’s Triangles and Circles has many musical twists and turns, oh yeah, triangles and circles too! University of Colorado at Ft. Collins music professor and saxophonist, Peter Sommer, is part of several leading groups along the Front Range, he also performs and records with his own group. Sommer’s new one is titled Narrando Historias or narrating history. He teams up with Eric Gunnison, Ron Miles and other Metro Denver players for this outing for Dazzle Recordings. Music historian and trombonist Chris Washburne and his SYOTOS (see you on the other side) ensemble offer their most recent CD, Low Ridin’, a fun filled session featuring funky Latin jazz takes on some well known hits of the pop world ideal for Spring and Summer listening.
In addition we’ll premier new ones by pianist-wordsmith Ben Sidran, Blue Camus, Fort Collins based pianist Ben Haugland’s new one, A Million Dreams featuring Denver raised trumpeter , Scott Wendholt. Also on tap will be veteran pianist Pete Malinverni’s tribute to cities with resolve on Emerging Markets. Finally, we will unwrap the latest by Austin, Texas based trumpeter and percussionist, Pete Rodriguez, a tribute to his father, salsa legend Pete “El Conde”.
