New Music Monday — Blue Moods, Jazz All-Stars, & Immanuel Wilkins
We hope you’ll tune in on Monday, January 17 at noon, with Arturo Gómez as he introduces music new to our library.
Blue Moods: “Myth & Wisdom”
April 22nd of 2022 will mark the centennial of the birth of the legendary bassist, pianist, composer and bandleader, Charles Mingus. This recording is the first of I’m sure many other tributes to follow. The myths and lore of Mingus are just as much a part of his legacy as his music, after all, Charles published a pamphlet on how to train a cat to use the toilet. Blue Moods is a quintet compromised of superb players all leaders of their own ensembles, Diego Rivera-tenor, Art Hirahara & David Kikoski sharing piano duties, Boris Kozlov-bass with Joe Strasser at the drums.
The Jazz All-Stars: “Volume 2”
Le Coq Records is a relatively new label that made an auspicious debut in 2020 with several outstanding releases featuring some heavy hitters of jazz including volume 1 of the all-stars. They kick off 2022 with the return of their all-stars that include, John Patitucci, Terell Stafford, Bill Cunliffe, Russell Malone, Alex Acuña, and too many others to list here. The revolving door of gifted musicians gives us 9 tracks, 2 of which feature the up-and-coming vocalist, Andy James.
Immanuel Wilkins: “The Seventh Hand”
Alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins follows up his acclaimed debut Omega with another striking album featuring his quartet; Micah Thomas-piano, Daryl Johns-bass, and Kweku Sumbry-drums plus a few guests. The album consists of an hour-long suite comprised of seven movements that strive to bring the quartet closer to complete unity by the end, where the music would be entirely improvised.
Every Monday starting at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are debuted ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or up-and-coming artist.
