New Music Monday: Aaron Diehl Trio & The Knights, Veronica Swift, Diva Jazz Orchestra
Join host Arturo Gómez on Lunchtime! on Mondays at noon for New Music Monday! This Monday, September 4, he’ll debut new music from Aaron Diehl Trio & The Knights, Veronica Swift and Diva Jazz Orchestra.
Aaron Diehl Trio & The Knights” “Zodiac Suite”
Originally from Colombus, Ohio and based in New York City since 2003, Aaron Diehl is considered a jazz pianist virtuoso. He relocated to NY after being a finalist in the Essential Ellington competition in 2002. He graduated from Julliard School with honors in 2007. Since then, Diehl has gone to play with many outstanding artists like Cécile McLorin Salvant, Quincy Jones, Wycliffe Gordon, and numerous others. In 2014 he was named the Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist, the youngest to receive that accolade. For his 7th recording as a leader, Aaron decided to update the Mary Lou Williams “Zodiac Suite” and chose the Knights Symphonic Orchestra conducted by the brothers Jacobsen, Eric, and Colin. Diehl also has his long-time collaborators, David Wong on bass and Aaron Kimmel playing drums.
Veronica Swift (self-titled)
Growing up in a jazz home where both of her parents are jazz musicians, Veronica absorbed jazz at a very young age; plus, living in New York City she heard many other types of music as well. In this new session, Swift shares her love of other genres alongside her jazz roots, she includes blues-rock and punk music styles. In early August Veronica played at Denver’s Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox with drummer Brian Viglione and the Dresden Dolls to a standing-room-only crowd yet she has not abandoned jazz upbringing as she continues to headline jazz festivals and jazz clubs throughout the United States. Some of her original fans may be turned away by Veronica’s alter ego, but there’s enough jazz in her new album to keep and expand her jazz fans following.
The Diva Jazz Orchestra: “30” Live at Dizzy’s Club
Drummer Sherrie Maricle went to a rehearsal in 1992 for an all-female big band thinking it would be a one-time performance. Lo and behold she was appointed the leader and music director for the newly formed Diva Jazz Orchestra and 15 recordings and 30 years later, Sherrie is still the band leader and music director. In addition to the big band, Maricle has also founded the Five Play Diva Quintet and the 3D Diva Trio, each group with its successful concerts and recordings! The 30th anniversary was recorded live at Dizzy’s Club Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC. At the end of the performance. The packed house gave the band a standing ovation and cheered loudly in appreciation.
Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist, if it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
