New Music Monday
On Monday, February 6, at noon, you’ll hear these highlight on Lunchtime! with Arturo Gómez.
Diego Rivera: Love and Peace
Coming off the most successful recording of his career, a top ten release in virtually every Best of 2022 list, the saxophonist-educator Diego Rivera follows up with his most ambitious project to date. This new album features original compositions and covers of rarely heard tunes. For this session, Diego selected the rhythm section of pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Boris Kozlov, and Aurora’s own, Rudy Royston on drums.
Bill Warfield and the Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestra: Time Capsule
After arriving in NYC from his native Baltimore in 1979, Warfield soon became an in-demand trumpeter and arranger. For the third recording of his jazz-funk band, he recruited new younger members to keep his sound fresh and current. Bill is an advocate for the power of horns and that is a constant throughout this new session. Unlike his previous albums, Mr. Warfield decided not to contribute any original compositions opting to re-arrange a wide array of his favorite tunes, standards, funk ‘n soul, and pop hits.
The Verve Jazz Ensemble: All In
Made up of musicians from the New York City Tri-State area, The Verve Jazz Ensemble has matured into a force to be reckoned with. This is their 8th album and as the trumpeter and leader Tatum Greenblatt says: “it’s a mid-20th century kind of vibe from a simmering pot of possible tune choices.” The playlist reflects this remark; there are standards, covers, originals, and even a rendition of The Odd Couple theme song. The Verve Jazz Ensemble is a septet consisting of a rhythm section, trumpet, tenor sax, alto sax/flute, and trombone, add to this the pianist doubles on guitar.
Now in its 20th Anniversary year, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of which are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist beginning at noon every Monday. —Arturo Gómez
