Mongo Santamaria Centennial
We’re celebrating Mongo Santamaria‘s Centennial today, Sunday, April 9 from 4 to 6pm, join Janine Santana and her guest co-host Arturo Gómez as the centennial celebration of Mongo Santamaria continues with a look at the more dance oriented and folkloric roots recordings of Mongo Santamaria. In the early 1960s Mongo and his best friend and bandmate, Willie Bobo left the Cal Tjader band to return to NY where their new band highly influenced the charanga craze and then laid down the foundation for the Latin Soul and Boogaloo explosion of the mid-1960s with some of the best NY Latin dance music ever recorded.
