The Ron LeGault – Harry Drabkin Quintet (Derek Banach – trumpet, Ken Walker – bass, Andreus Schmid – drums) performs music of Charles Mingus and Charlie Mariano on Thursdays in January.  Mariano was an accomplished sax player (who led successful groups of his own) and collaborated with the legendary Mingus in the early 1960s and was the featured soloist on the classic “Black Saint and Sinner Lady” album. The unique and vibrant music of these two icons will be explored by this talented quintet throughout.

Ron LeGault is an accomplished Denver jazz pianist and plays widely in the area. Harry Drabkin (alto and tenor sax) studied with Mariano and subsequently joined him on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, prior to his career in medicine. While the playing of Derek Banach (trumpet) can be reminiscent of the great Lee Morgan, his beautiful sound and improvisations are individual and the two horns blend exquisitely on the arrangements. Ken Walker (bass) might be best described as “the consummate jazz artist” in Denver. It’s fitting to play the music of Charles Mingus with the talent of Ken Walker at the helm. Lastly, Andreus Schmidt (drums) brings a sensitive creativity to the instrument and provides an excellent complement to the ensemble; he’s also a founder of the Denver-based “Spherio.”
