Tune in to Afternoon Jazz with Kim Berry on Friday, June 14, at 2 pm when Matthew Whitaker joins Kim to talk about his new release “On Their Shoulders: An Organ Tribute.”

This is Whitaker’s fourth album, and is an homage to the Hammond B-3 players who inspired him: Jimmy Smith, Charles Earland, Joey DeFrancesco, and Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark of the Clark Sisters.

Whitaker adds two originals, which are in-studio jam sessions “Yessah” and “Don’t Count Me Out.” This is the first release on his new label MOCAT Records. The twenty-three-year-old Julliard graduate, born premature and blind from birth was a child prodigy and has accomplished more in his young life than many twice his age.

With numerous awards for composition, performance, writing and producing short film and documentary scores, performing with symphony orchestras to being musical director for “Billy Strayhorn: Something To Live For, “one can only imagine what the warm, enthusiastic, and humble young man will accomplish in the future.
