Live & Local: Cécile McLorin Salvant on stage at The Newman Center
Cécile McLorin Salvant embodies every angle of the word artist. A composer | A singer | A visual artist | A curator – Each of these titles could be explored in a single lifetime but instead she combines these avenues to create fully realized pieces of art. She is a multiple Grammy winner and in 2020, received the MacArthur Fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award. Her latest album “Mélusine” crosses boundaries at every level. Of this album, Dr. Angela Davis said it is “a bold declaration that she is willing to answer the call of her expansive imagination, especially when it urges her to transgress borders based on language, genre, cultural tradition, and historical time.” The album pulls storytelling from both European folklore and Haitian Voudou. While mostly sung in French, Salvant also sings in Occitan, English, and Haitian Kreyòl. She effortlessly blends multiple genres like folk, baroque, jazz, and country and includes songs dating as far back as the 12th century. Her work unearths the secrets of the past and reinvents them through a contemporary lens. At the end of the day, Cécile McLorin Salvant’s love and appreciation for the world’s cultural fabric is the source of the new musical realities she creates.
Cécile McLorin Salvant will be in Denver on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at The Newman Center for the Performing Arts, kicking off their 2024-2025 Newman Center Presents season.
