Live at KUVO: Steph Johnson Trio | Oct. 2

Steph Johnson – a soul-jazz vocalist and guitarist based in San Diego, CA – will perform live with her trio in the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio October 2 from 4:15 to 5 PM MT.

Johnson will be joined by Rob Thorsen (bass) and Fernando Gomez (drums).

In 2011, Johnson had a chance encounter with esteemed upright bassist Rob Thorsen in the green room of the KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM Ocean Beach Music Festival.

Soon after that meeting,  Thorsen and Johnson  began playing and collaborating together.  The music they created took on a new life and gave Johnson the opportunity to delve deeper into jazz, swing, Latin, and soul.

The pair connected with drummer Fernando Gomez, a musician with a multitude of rhythmic styles, and almost immediately formed the Steph Johnson Trio and hit the road. When they returned from touring, they recorded Nature Girl, released in 2013.

Nature Girl received international radio play and opened the door for the trio to be invited to perform at multiple festivals in the US and Mexico.

The group is currently working on a collection of originals and jazz standards for their upcoming album with Grammy winning producer Kamau Kenyatta.

When not on the road, the group performs regularly at Croce’s Park West in San Diego and La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, CA.
