Leo Nocentelli: a founder of funk guitar
interview with Leo Nocentelli and music
On his way to appear in the “New Orleans All-Star Rhythm Revue” at Balistreri Vineyards in Denver this Saturday – part of KUVO’s signature fundraising event “Live at the Vineyards” – guitarist Leo Nocentelli took a few minutes to talk on the phone with host of “First Take” Carlos Lando.
Famed for his early funky rhythms and scratch-guitar work with The Meters, Nocentelli shared stories of his work with fellow New Orleanians Henry Butler and Donald Harrison (also appearing this Saturday at Live at the Vineyards). The interview ends with part of The Meters cover of the Lee Dorsey hit “Ride Your Pony.” (Nocentelli played on the original 1996 version.)
